Sex and the City: A Wallpaper Study

For years, everyone has loved the style of their four favorite girls: Carrie, Miranda, Samantha, and Charlotte from HBO’s show Sex and the City. The four women evoked very different styles, while each remaining chic, fearless, and fun. Many women self-identify with at least one of the leading ladies – you can be witty like Carrie, business-minded like Miranda, outgoing like Samantha, or romantic like Charlotte. More often, we found ourselves identifying with more than one of the women. No doubt, you’ve tried to match your personal style, accent, and even your decor around their lives. While the wallpaper on our site wasn’t used in the series, we do have some very similar prints available for your next renovation!

In the second Sex and the City movie, we see Carrie and Big finally settle down together and build Carrie’s “adult” apartment – complete with luxe designs and elegant touches. Still, there are many places where the old, outrageous Carrie shines through. The apartment definitely shines through as a compromise between the couple.

The wallpaper named Marrakesh is very, very similar to the wallpaper used in the movie, though the colors are inverted. It has the  Our Pantana Damask wallpaper is very similar to something we could see Mr. Big going for – very luxe, very rich looking, and classic – just like him! However, if you want to go with a more Carrie style, which is a little more funky and youthful, we recommend the Living with Art print, because it is just a little more quirky and curly.

While we didn’t get a great look at Miranda’s grownup apartment, there are quite a few iconic scenes that take place in the dining room area – most notably, the “baby wipe me” scene where she falls back in love with Steve. Miranda’s style is very simple and down to earth, she’s always so busy that she does not have time for taking care of her apartment or impractical design elements. Of course, she always has Magda for those messy moments!

The interior of Miranda’s office and dining room area is a simple white print with very, very faint vertical lines running through it. She matches the lines to the stains of the wood and the matted picture frames. For a similar wallpaper, look no further than Core Strips Elements which also has a very subtle print. If you want to amp it up just a little more, the Floral Stripes Wallpaper gives it a hint of color and interest, while still staying clean. For those of you who have a Brady or a Steve in your lives, and white walls just won’t work, try the Pinstripe Stripes, which is a darker wallpaper with white stripes.

Samantha Jones was one of the most groundbreaking female characters to ever grace the television screen. She broke boundaries in her personal and professional life, and make us laugh while doing it. However, it was during one of her most poignant scenes that we see the amazing interior of her bathroom. In the final season of Sex and the City, after being diagnosed with breast cancer, Samantha decides to shave off her hair.

To get the sultry appeal of this bathroom, without having to go through the tiling process, we recommend this black, 4″ Tile Wallpaper. If you want a little more depth to your walls, you might want to go for this Bath Bath Bath IV wallpaper that resembles those pre-war, exposed brick bathrooms that New York is famous for. However, the one thing that really stands out about this wallpaper is how perfectly imperfect it is, so it that is what you are looking for, we recommend the Suede style.

Charlotte York’s Park Avenue apartment is what many little girls dream about. The crisp linens, romantic touches, and expensive decor shine through in the home that was (fictionally) picture in Better Homes and Garden. The wallpaper featured in Charlotte’s bedroom when she was married to Trey was very dainty and girls, with leaves and florals scattered throughout.  It is no doubt that Charlotte paid top dollar for her wallpaper, especially because she found a chair that matched it perfectly!

To match that Charlotte class without breaking the bank, we suggest Simple Space 2, which emulates the leaf and flower design she used. That print alone comes in four different colors, so if you want to go a little more funky, you definitely can. However, if you want something with a less girlish print, our Tuscan Tan Marble print would work fantastically! Finally, if you want to appease Mrs. McDoogle, the Lewis Tartan Wallpaper  will still match the colors of Charlotte’s world, but will definitely liven up the space.

Sex and the City was a groundbreaking show. Whether you caught it every week on HBO, or you’re catching up through syndication, you most definitely identify with one of the SATC gals or her man. It doesn’t matter if you’re in the heart of Manhattan or in the vineyards of Napa, everyone can emulate the iconic styles of these four women.
